A Brief Slippery History of Skiing

The Rock Drawings and Kalvträskskidan
Before the creation of resorts like La Tania, Val d’Isere and Les Menuires, ski sports were common practice among our ancestors. The first known clues, as to how far back in time skiing began, were discovered in the earlier part of the 20th century. Back in the day, it would seem that the Kalvträsk pistes, rather than Meribel or Les Menuires ski slopes, were perhaps more popular places to ski. In 1924 the oldest known ski, the Kalvträskskidan, was found in a marsh close to the village of Kalvträsk in Sweden. The carbon dating places this amazing find to somewhere around 3200 B.C! If you need any more proof, in 1933, 4500 to 5000 year old rock drawings were found at Rødøy in Norway. Then again, in 2001, more rock drawings were discovered at Steinkjer. These drawings depict a man on skis with a stick in his hand.
The Early Bird Skiers
So where exactly were skis invented; was it on the pistes in Scandinavia, the Les Menuires ski slopes, or the Asian snowy mountain caps? There are varied reports as to the identity of the inventors of the first skis, and opinion differs wildly. One theory is that skis were used during, and after, the Ice Age in Europe, while others suggest that the inhabitants of the Sayan Mountains in Asia may have been among the first skiers. Some people think that skiing was also popular in Iran. They believe that in around 2000 BC the Iranian tribes would have used a device made from animal hide to ski. The distant ancestors of the Sami from Fennoscandia are said to be some of the earliest people known to ski. The Sami were known as skridfinner, scricfinni, scritefinni, and ?????ί?????, which translates to ‘Skiing Sami’.
Difference in the Skis
There are a few differences in the skis used by our ancestors. Modern skis (for example the Telemark ski bindings) were developed from the Fennoscandian model from the 19th century rather than the Russo-Baltic type. The skis originating from East Siberia consisted of a thin board which would sometimes be covered in furs. The binding of this particular ski was a vertical four-hole binding, as opposed to the horizontal stem-hole binding that also existed.
The Legends
